Starboard has performed
a number of actuator feasibility studies and designs for Bell Helicopter
TEXTRON working with Midé Technology in support of the NASA/Army
funded Variable Geometry Advanced Rotor Technology (VGART) program.
A variety of on-blade actuator concepts were analyzed to support
trade studies, including electromagnetic, piezoelectric, and shape
memory alloy systems. Following a downselect process, a detailed
design of an electric motor-driven ballscrew actuator was completed
for an extensible blade tip system. Actuator flight control has
been evaluated as well as sensor systems and advanced slipring designs.
