A
space debris damage protection and detection shield was developed
with Midé Technology using Nickel Titanium wires embedded
in a thermoplastic matrix. The strain-induced change in resistance
is used to detect damage and the energy-absorption property of the
embedded wires is used to reduce impact damage. A multilayer laminate
design was developed for the application. A composite failure model
augmented with nonlinear material properties was used to evaluate
the relative strength of competing designs. Two types of fiber weaves
were tested in comparison with stainless steel wires. Both 0.22
caliber ballistic tests and hypervelocity impact tests were performed
on the panels.
