Active structural acoustic
control has been investigated for the reduction of sound transmission
and radiation from submarine hulls. Piezoelectric actuators embedded
in composite laminates were fabricated for actively controlling
the structural modes of a plate. Efficient acoustic radiating modes
were targetted such that the controller would shift vibration energy
to less efficient modes, thus reducing the acoustic radiation. This
work was performed at MIT for the Office of Naval Research.
